Difference Between Respiration and Photorespiration

Difference Between Respiration and Photorespiration:

Following are the points of difference between Respiration and Photorespiration.

Dark (Normal) RespirationPhotorespiration
It takes place almost in all the cells of the plant. It occurs in the green photosynthesizing cells.
It occurs both in light and dark.It takes place only in the presence of light.
It is a breakdown of the respiratory substrate with oxygen as the terminal oxidant. It is direct oxidation of photosynthetic intermediates.
It is found in all types of plants, animals and other organisms. It is restricted to C3 plants.
There is a generation of usable energy in the form of ATP both through substrate phosphorylation as well as oxidative phosphorylation. It does not produce ATP. Rather, it consumes the same.
It liberates energy.It consumes energy.
Steps of respiration occur in cytoplasm and mitochondria. It occurs in the chloroplast and may require the help of peroxisome and mitochondrion.
A substrate is commonly glucose, though other food materials (fats, proteins, organic acids) can also be used.A substrate for photorespiration is RuBP and its breakdown product is glycolate.
End products are CO2 and waterEnd products are CO2 and PGA.
The end products are not recycled. The end products are recycled in the cells producing them.
It involves glycolysis, Kreb’s Cycle and ETS.It does not involve Glycolysis, Kreb’s Cycle, and ETS.
It increases the net productivity of green plants. It decreases the net productivity of green plants.
H2O2 is not formed.It produces H2O2.
Essential for the survival of organisms. It is not essential for survival.
