Difference Between Transpiration and Evaporation
Difference Between Transpiration and Evaporation:
The following are the points of difference between Transpiration and Evaporation-
Transpiration | Evaporation |
---|
It is a physiological process. | It is purely a physical process. |
Transpiration is the loss of water from the surface of living cells. | Evaporation is loss from the free surface of the water. |
The influence of environmental conditions is modified by plant factors. | It is purely controlled by environmental conditions. |
Forces like vapour pressure, diffusion pressure, osmotic pressure control the process. | Environmental factors like relative humidity and air current influence the process. |
Anatomy of the transpiring organ is important in controlling transpiration. | The internal structure of evaporating surface has little effect. |
Transpiration can continue even when the air is saturated because transpiring organs have higher temperature and higher vapour pressure. | It does not occur if the air is saturated with water vapours. |
It is a slow process. | Comparatively a fast process. |
It initially increases with the increase in wind velocity but later begins to decline. | It increases with the velocity of the wind. |
It is regulated by the amount of soil water available to the plant. | This is a continuous process, till water is present. |
It makes the surface of leaves and young stems wet and protects them from sunburn. | It provides dryness to the free surface. |
CO2 concentration controls transpiration through its effect on the opening and closing of stomata. | CO2 concentration has little effect on evaporation. |
Light has a lot of effect on transpiration due to its heating effect and controlling the opening of stomata. | Light has no influence on evaporation. |
