Importance of the Civil Disobedience Movement:
Though the Civil Disobedience Movement did not win freedom for the country it left an indelible mark in the annals of the independence movement.
(1) The movement succeeded in arousing a patriotic fervor in the country. People became aware of their responsibilities in the struggle for freedom. They could now understand the concept of non-violence.
(2) The movement widened the base of the freedom struggle. Not only did it bring together people from different social groups like the merchants, peasants, and workers, but it also brought the women and the Depressed Classes into active political struggle. Temples, and churches, hitherto inaccessible, were thrown open to them.
(3) The government realized that basic constitutional reforms had to be granted. The Government of India Act 1935 introduced the principle of the federation and provincial autonomy, a long-standing demand of the Indian national leaders.
(4) Last but not least, according to Bipan Chandra ‘for Indian women the movement was the most liberating experience to date and can truly be said to have marked their entry into the public space.’
